i’m not going to get into how many “f-words” there were, or how many naked butts i saw… which, now that i think about it, i think there was only one. rather, here’s my opinion of the movies i saw on break… i’m not saying do or don’t see these movies. but just in case you care….

i am legend:

one of my favorite things is when the trailer doesn’t give the whole plot away. there’s nothing worse than going to a comedy and realizing that all of the good jokes were used in the movie trailer. don’t you agree? i am legend is a perfect example of trailer vs. big screen. when i went into the theater, i didn’t know what to expect. in fact, i had no idea what was going to happen – why was he alone? was everyone else dead? is it a candy or a popcorn movie? (candy for fun, popcorn to relieve the stress and anxiety). let’s just say it’s a popcorn movie. well worth the lack of information in the trailer. plus: not knowing anything made the surprises more, surprising. minus: it seemed loosely tied together at the end for me. it left me longing – not good for a movie that definitely will not have a sequel.

sweeney todd: the demon barber of fleet street

before i start, you have to know that it already was on top of my list because i’m a fan of musicals. i’m also a fan of tim burton. so put the two hand in hand and you have a happy me. this was a candy and popcorn flick, and we even threw in a rockstar to wash it all down. the irony is part of the beauty of this show. depp and bonham-carter are a winning pair. of course, don’t expect broadway. the big screen can never capture the magic of stage, and vice versa. so don’t go and compare – but do go and see the story of the barber who was naive. warning: if you can’t handle lots of blood or song and dance behind cannibalism, you probably won’t enjoy this too much. plus: good plot + sondheim + tim burton + johnny depp + helena bonham carter + …. well, you get the point. minus: the vengeful barber was too much for me at times. and oddly more so, mrs lovett’s the worst pies in london really pushed my gag reflex to the limit.

p.s. i love you

don’t let the happy trailer fool you. it might be a perfect date movie, but only if you can handle almost real grief and mourning. maybe it’s because i’m newly married and i can’t bear the thought of losing my husband. but as in any tragedy, there’s always hope and redemption – in one form or another. and it had ireland in it. come on people – how many heart strings are you going to pull in me? plus: love, ireland, passion, loss and the inspiration to live a full life. minus: i was glad when it ended because i just physically could not cry anymore. i couldn’t eat candy or popcorn in this one

national treasure … 2

i loved the first national treasure. a treasure hunt was the perfect premise for a good action movie. they pulled it off – codes, secrets, conspiracies, the whole shebang. i had hoped the same for this time around. instead, we stuck it out for about 2 hours of cheesy action, bad acting and extremely unrealistic situations time and time again. unfortunately, this didn’t win me over. also -what’s up with nicholas cage looking like he just walked out of the veneer store and botox lounge. plus: i always like treasure hunts – regardless of how unrealistic they are. minus: i really felt like i wasted my money.

juno

ellen page was magical. she won my heart. 16 year old girl gets pregnant and decides to give it up for adoption. the slight twists and turns this tale made were delightful and heartwarming. it was a honest story – funny, warm, bittersweet and honest. i really recommend this for indie lovers (of music and film). definitely a candy movie. plus: nothing beats a well-told, well-performed, sweet endearing tale of love and determination. minus: it ended.

… give me your thoughts. do you disagree? have a recommendation?
